There is a constant war my house in the morning, as my younger son refuses to get moving in the morning so my wife can take him to school. He is at a defiant age, and he pushes her around a bit. Then I have to be the bad guy, which is a shitty dynamic for all of us. I am sitting in my room doing the stress breathing thing they taught me at cardiac rehab.

On the upside, the first rain of the year is falling steadily. No Sunchaser today. On a random note, I added another element to my home exercise program.

Kinja'd!!!

I also bought a small folding bench, and used them yesterday before my treadmill session. The exercise world can be a daunting place to embark when you are a fat guy who had a heart attack too soon trying to get healthy. I am choosing to ignore the chatter and sales pitches, and purchasing items where I can follow what they showed me in cardiac rehab, which is fairly simple. I am going to research and learn, and eventually it may get more sophisiticated as I get deeper into it.

Oh well. Shitty day ahead with a bunch of client bullshit I don’t want to deal with. I am cranky this week. I am supposed to go to the opening ceremonies of the County Fair tomorrow at the invitation of the Hispanic Area Foundation, but I think I am going to cancel.

I need the storm to clear by Thursday. Sunchaser trip will not be revised.

On that note, I am looking for a good Android road trip planning app that will allow me to plan and record routes. Anyone try something like this and have a recommendation?

When my kids were younger, we had to switch up our morning routine in order to ease the tensions in the house. The kids were more tolerant of/more responsive to the way I got them out of bed and moving. If their mom tried, they were defiant and grumpy. So, I started getting them up early and taking them to school. My wife would pick them up at the end of the day. After a while, we switched again. I wanted to be available to help coach volleyball and track, so I started going to work early and my wife would get the kids ready. It worked then because the kids were a little older and used to the routine.

Maybe if you took over those duties for a while and got your son involved in your morning routine, you could get him turned around. Perhaps he would like the responsibility of feeding Toby in the morning?

Nice set — powerblocks?

Want to hear a crazy tip? Avoid the bench. Do as many exercise as you can from the standing position — just the additional movement of picking things up, as well as the stability required by your core to keep everything stable, will make for a much more useful workout. Any time you can avoid using external objects for stabilization, the more you can engage your smaller muscles all over the body.

(If you have back/hip problems, forget I said anything)

I also hate playing the bad guy as a dad . I had anger issues as a younger man and worked hard to overcome them. Now I’m being pressured by my wife (and society as a whole) to be the dad who strikes fear into his kids’ hearts. It’s absolutely sapping to my motivation and leaves me exhausted.

I hope he grows out of it soon. We’ve all been through it, it’s not a good time for either side.

one of my daughters has trouble engaging the clutch. I know the engines running but she just doesn;t go anywhere. Getting dressed?? lol 2 hours. brush your teeth, 20 minutes... lunchtime ends around dinner. I dont think shes doing to be defiant, its just hey look at that thing over there, i wonder what unicorns would say if they were real, ooo something shiny....

They have been slamming doors alot lately I’m getting annoyed with it. they are just playing, not doing it because they are mad. I told them if they didn;t stop i’m taking the door...well they didn;t stop and I took that door right off the hinges. No all I have to do is look at the door and they stop doing whatever it is they were doing.

I hear you man. It’s tough around our house, a big problem is that my wife is terrible at waking up herself. We’ve had countless arguments about it over the years. So what ends up happening is I’m running around yelling WAKE UP at everyone and it feels shitty too.

I know the feels. You know what really sucks is when I have a bad day at work, get home and the kids are being assholes and I loose my shit. I thought I left that drama at work.

I dealt with the same thing when my son was in middle school. It sucked. He’s a freshman in high school this year and everything changed. He’s much more mature and gets up no problem, gets himself ready, and out the door - no issues, no drama.

Hang in there!

My wife has an interesting theory on this. That I should not be the disciplinarian, she should. Her reasoning is sound. First, I try to not get angry very fast, but it happens. More than that, though, I’m bigger and inherently stronger. We don’t beat the kids, but if I have to pull one kid off the other, or grab an object being used to bludgeon the other kid/house/car/imaginary friend, I’m more likely to impart more force than necessary, especially in the moment when emotions are high. So far it’s worked. I’m there to enforce and support her, but my job is to hang back until i’m needed, I guess. I dunno, it keeps me calmer, at the very least.

Also, Gaia GPS is super popular among the overlanders, but might be a bit more outdoorsy and less roady than you’re looking for.  Then again, it might be perfect...
